In 1994, Mr. Head originated the concept for launching a new, national educational organization for criminal defense lawyers who represented citizens accused of impaired driving offenses. He first launched a DUI law program called “Mastering Scientific Evidence in DUI/DWI Cases” (MSE) in Atlanta, which is now run nationally by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. In the 1990's, Drunk Driving Defense was a key law practice area for criminal defense attorneys.

As an offshoot of the highly-successful MSE program, he convened a meeting of America’s top DUI attorneys in Atlanta for purposes of launching a national training organization for lawyers focusing on this area of law. He was one of the twelve founding Regents who, in 1995,  formed the National College for DUI Defense, Inc., and conducted a 3-day training program at Harvard Law School's Austin Hall. He also served as a Regent of the National College for the first three years following its creation, and again from 2000 to 2003. The National College for DUI Defense is widely recognized as the country’s largest training institution for DUI defense lawyers. This Group has the exclusive right to certify DUI attorneys as “specialists” under the auspices of the American Bar Association, which oversees Board Certification.

For more than a decade, Mr. Head has been board-certified by the American Bar Association as a specialist in the defense of impaired drivers by the National College of DUI Defense. In 2003, he was honored as the “Top DUI Defense Lawyer in the United States” by a vote of the National College’s then 500-member NCDD affiliates. The award was made at National College for DUI Defense at the summer session conducted at Harvard University School of Law in July of 2003. No other attorney has been so honored since the National College was formed in 1995.

Mr. Head is the recipient of numerous other high-profile awards. These include: Best Lawyers in America, SuperLawyers, Top 100 Trial Lawyers in America, Martindale-Hubbell "av" highest 5.0 of 5.0 rating, National Who’s Who Registry, Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who in the World Registry.

Mr. Head is active with the bar association and other professional groups. In 1978, he served as Chairman of the Bridge-the-Gap Seminar for new attorneys at the Institute of Continuing Legal Education conducted in Atlanta, GA.

Mr. Head has remained active, serving as founder of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, conducting workshops called “Defense of Drinking Drivers Institute” since 1992. He now rotates the chair position with another Atlanta DUI lawyer.

Mr. Head became of founding member of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 1992. He has been active in the AAFS and ICADTS, which focus on the forensic science aspects of his law practice.

He was also a founder of Advanced Forensic Science Seminar for DUI Defense Attorneys, Mastering Scientific Evidence in DUI-DWI Cases. This is an intensive study program that operated by the NCDD and the Texas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Mr. Head has been a LIFE Member of the  Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1994, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1995.

He has co-authored twelve books on DUI-related issues, and has contributed several chapters to other books. Mr. Head’s books include 101 Ways to Avoid a Drunk Driving Conviction, The DUI Book, and The Georgia DUI Trial Practice Manual (which he currently co-authors).

The book Mr. Head wrote for citizens nationwide who have been charged with DUI, is called The DUI Book. He has since co-authored 10 related state-specific editions of this book with attorneys from other states, including TN, FL, NY, CA, FL and other states.

Atlanta Magazine featured Mr. Head in their March 2001 cover story. After conducting a survey of Georgia attorneys, the magazine declared Mr. Head to be “Atlanta’s Best DUI Lawyer.” In 2012, Best Lawyers in America named him the top Georgia DUI lawyer.

Mr. Head’s firm, William C. Head, P.C., is “av” rated by Martindale-Hubbell. This is the highest rating a law firm may receive (for ethics and competency). Martindale-Hubbell also named the firm to “The Bar Registry of Pre-Eminent Attorneys.” This is one of the highest honors a law firm in America can receive.

Mr. Head has consistently been named one of Georgia’s Super Lawyers every year that this publication has been issued in Georgia, since 2004, including this year.
